Artist Statement

Life is a continuous cycle of birth, death and regeneration against tremendous odds. Much of my work involves the contemplation of this cycle through enduring religions and nature. My art making begins with the search for objects which reflect the struggles to survive in the Modern world. The found elements I work into objects of reverence and beauty. I find myself drawn to odd bits and pieces of rusted metals, shards of glass, broken tools, bones, wire, shells and other discards and detritus of life. I combine them to transform what is broken into something new. My primary medium in which I combine these fragments is clay. Clay is my metaphor for the Earth, the base from which we all came and from where we all will leave. It combines with water and recombines with fire. It can be recycled and reused endlessly and combined with other items to create a new whole. For me, clay expresses the process of continuous fragmentation and recombination.
