Statement

When it comes to fused glass work I am basically self taught.  In other words, no one has told me how not to do something, which is a good thing because then I would just HAVE to do it to see what happens.

I call my basic fused glass work (using glass paints, adding colored chips, sandwiching metal leaf between two pieces) \"palate cleansers\" as they yield relatively fast and dependable results and are just what I need to clear my head after a long, involved ceramic series.

Ghost Plate, fused glass collodion ambrotype upcycled fine art
2001
Ambrotype, Glass plate, Fused glass, Glass paint, Kiln fired, Mold slumped, Molded
BUY
$200.00
11" x 11" x 1/2" high
Truly one of a kind. The ambrotype was a self portrait made and rejected for his purposes by my husband.

I wondered what would happen if I slumped it on top of a piece of glass in my kiln. I LOVED it!
Just after this firing the kiln broke. It turns out for several weeks it had not been firing at the displayed temperature and since I didn't use witness cones I don't know what that temperature was. I have been trying for years since to get ambrotypes to fuse this way but no dice.

This display plate is made by slumping window glass in a crenellated form with a scattering of colored glass bits on top.

I purposely fired it very hot and fast to give it a blue translucent textured surface and lend it depth and dimension by trapping air bubbles inside.

Coated on the back with glass paint so hanging hardware or stand won't show through.

I think the camera became a chimera judging by the look! Put in a stand, hang on the wall or lay flat.
